Tom Begich Calls for Transparency and Legislative Investigation Into Secret Voter Agreement
JUNEAU — Gubernatorial candidate Tom Begich is calling on Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom to be fully transparent about a confidential agreement that transferred Alaska’s voter file to the Trump Administration and also gave the U.S. Department of Justice authority to review Alaska’s voter rolls, identify voters for removal, and pressure the State to act within 45 days — creating a system where federal officials can effectively decide who stays on Alaska’s voter rolls.
Tom Begich is urging the Alaska Legislature to immediately investigate the agreement and is requesting a direct meeting with Dahlstrom to explain how and why the federal government wasgiven this role in Alaska’s elections.
“Alaskans deserve clear answers,” Begich said. “Lt. Governor Dahlstrom needs to be transparent about what she agreed to, why it was done in secret, and how Washington is now involved in our voting system.”
Secret Agreement Gives Washington Influence Over Alaska Elections
According to reporting by Dermot Cole, Dahlstrom signed a confidential agreement allowing federal officials to review Alaska’s voter rolls and push for removals on an accelerated timeline.
“When I saw this report, I was outraged,” Begich said. “This agreement gives Washington the power to pressure our state over who gets to vote. That is unacceptable.”
“Our voter rolls belong to Alaskans,” he added. “They do not belong to politicians in Washington, D.C.”
Cole’s reporting also shows that Alaska is among a very small number of states that have taken this extreme step of allowing the Trump Administration to exert unprecedented influence over which voters remain on the rolls.
“Most states have refused to hand over this level of control,” Begich said. “It is astonishing that Alaska would bend this far to Washington and Mar-a-Lago.”
Possible Violations of Federal and State Law
Tom Begich warned that the agreement may violate the National Voter Registration Act, which limits voter purges close to elections.
“You cannot purge people right before an election,” Begich said. “And you certainly should not be giving that authority to the federal government.”
He said the agreement raises serious legal and constitutional concerns.
“This threatens our right to run our own elections,” Begich said. “It undermines public trust and puts voters at risk.”
Call for Accountability and Action
Tom Begich is urging the Alaska Legislature to open a formal investigation into:
• How the agreement was negotiated
• Who approved it
• Whether it complies with state and federal law
• How it affects voters’ rights
“These actions may violate the law,” Begich said. “The Legislature has a duty to investigate.”
He also called on Lt. Gov. Dahlstrom to be accountable. “She should answer questions publicly and be transparent about what she agreed to and why,” he said.
Tom Begich urged Alaskans to speak out.
“Call your legislators. Call your senators,” he said. “Tell them you are not okay with the federal government determining who gets to vote in Alaska. Demand transparency. Demand accountability.”
