Statement from Tom Begich on the Early Release of Governor Dunleavy’s FY27 Budget Proposal

ANCHORAGE — Tom Begich issued the following statement today in response to the Governor’s early release of FY2027 budget highlights:

“I appreciate the Governor releasing his intentions early. But once again, he is signaling a full Permanent Fund Dividend without addressing how we will fund the basic services Alaskans count on. The dividend matters because it helps many families make ends meet. But it has to be part of a responsible plan, not something that forces cuts to schools, public safety, or healthcare.”

A Responsible, Transparent Fiscal Approach

The preliminary outline does not yet show how essential services will be funded alongside a full dividend, and Begich encouraged a more balanced discussion once the fiscal plan is released.

A responsible fiscal plan, he emphasized, should not put extra strain on those who can least afford it.

“I urge the Governor and the Legislature not to place the cost of state services on the people least able to afford them,” Begich said. “Alaska can support a dividend and strong public services, but only if we work together on a plan that makes sense for the long term. ”

Looking Ahead to the Full Fiscal Plan

“I’ll wait to review the Governor’s full proposal before offering broader comment. When the complete plan is released, I’ll support what I align with, offer alternatives where they’re needed, and resist when warranted. Alaskans deserve a fiscal path that is steady, fair, and transparent, ” said Begich.
